Shopify Buy Now Not Working When Add to Cart Works

First identify the control: Shopify’s accelerated checkout button, a branded wallet button or a theme/app button labelled “Buy Now.” A working Add to Cart button does not prove that this separate purchase route is configured correctly.

Reproduce one exact failure

Record the product URL, selected variant, quantity, subscription or one-time choice, device/browser and what happens after the click. Check whether the failure occurs before checkout opens, after a redirect or during payment. Payment declines need a different investigation from a button that never responds.

Symptom Safe next test What it narrows down
Button is greyed out Select an available variant and compare another eligible product Variant state or product-specific eligibility versus a general theme fault
Click produces no response Repeat in a clean browser and inspect the same case in an unpublished theme preview Browser context versus theme/app interactions
Wrong product or redirect Compare the selected variant and destination with the intended action Product-form state or custom routing rather than a generic speed problem

Check theme support and compatibility

For Shopify’s native button, inspect the product template’s Buy buttons block and accelerated-checkout setting. An older or heavily modified theme may need code review. Button presentation also depends on payment and browser context; every visitor will not necessarily see the same wallet.

Accelerated checkout can bypass the cart. If your workflow depends on cart attributes such as a delivery-date field, investigate compatibility before assuming the button should behave like the full cart route. Shopify also flags potential conflicts with cart-related, currency-conversion and external-checkout apps.

Compare safely

  1. Duplicate the current theme for investigation. Record its app embeds and product-template assignment.
  2. Use an unmodified compatible theme preview as a comparison. Keep the same product, variant, browser and buying context.
  3. If the preview works, narrow the difference to theme code, app embeds and product-form behaviour. That result is evidence of a difference, not proof that one named app is responsible.
  4. Inspect browser errors and network failures around the click. Have a developer map the error to the product form or app before editing code.
  5. After a scoped fix, retest Add to Cart, variant changes, quantity, subscription choices and the accelerated route on mobile and desktop.

Do not publish the comparison theme, delete app code or change live payment methods simply to see what happens. An illustrative isolation test is: the same available variant fails in the current preview and opens checkout in the clean preview. That narrows the investigation but does not identify a root cause by itself.

For a theme or purchase-flow fix, send the reproduction steps, failing URL, exact button type and comparison result. If both purchase routes show unavailable stock, start with the sold-out diagnosis instead.
